Xero Accounting Review: Features, Benefits, Pricing, and Cons

Whether you have its basic or most advanced plan, the Xero app supports unlimited users for real-time collaboration between what is distressed debt investing your employees, accountants, and financial advisors. We also ensure that the software offers most standard accounting features and reports, awarding higher rankings to those that provide advanced services, like tax filing. While Xero has a lot going for it, pricing increases, a lack of built-in payroll, and limited features on its least expensive plans are potential issues. Additionally, customer support has gone downhill since our last review. Still, despite the price ruling out the software for some small businesses, Xero has a lot to offer for medium and large businesses or those in need of multiple users.

In contrast to allowing unlimited users, Xero does limit you to one organization or business per subscription. In other words, if you need to do accounting for more than one business, you’ll need to purchase an account for each one. This is a real drawback for owners of multiple businesses or bookkeepers who work with multiple clients. Once you’ve got your bank information in Xero, the software will help you match up your transactions for reconciliation (Figure B). Keep in mind that bulk reconciliation is not included with the cheapest Early plan, so you might have to pay to upgrade if you want this feature.

Xero lets you add your payment terms to an invoice so customers know when it is due (due dates must be at least one day after the invoice’s date). After you connect a payment service to Xero, a “pay now” button is automatically paying the principal on a car loan added to your invoices so customers can pay you directly from the invoice. Xero’s online invoicing tool makes it easy to bill customers and receive payments online. NerdWallet independently reviews accounting software products before determining our top picks.

Unlike QuickBooks Desktop, Xero also has the mobility and modern UI of cloud-based software. Other affordable, easy-to-use accounting software such as QuickBooks Online and Freshbooks have limits on the amount of users they support or charge extra for additional users. Xero supports unlimited users, which is great for businesses that have multiple team members who need to access their accounting information. Many accounting software for small businesses offer a 30-day free trial; however, Xero’s plans are less expensive than many of its competitors, starting at just $15/month. Xero often offers promotional pricing, making its plans even cheaper for business owners who take advantage of its deals.

Accounting app

  1. It allows three users for its Essentials plan ($55 per month) and 25 users for its top plan, the Advanced ($200 per month).
  2. Popular alternatives, such as FreshBooks and QuickBooks Online, cost at least $18 monthly without introductory discounts.
  3. We deliver timely updates, interesting insights, and exclusive promos to your inbox.
  4. For unlimited invoicing and bill-paying capacity, you’ll need to upgrade to the Growing plan.

Like other major accounting packages, such as QuickBooks, Xero’s feature-packed interface can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. However, compared to competitors we reviewed, Xero excels at presenting information in an easy-to-understand way. For example, Xero’s cash flow bar chart displays cash going out of the company as a gray line and cash coming in as a blue line. A business owner trying to maintain positive cash flow would look for the blue line to remain above the gray line (see the screenshot below for an example).

Reports also are customizable, with adjustable formatting and the option to add your own formulas and groupings. For instance, you can drag and drop certain expense categories into a single subgroup — an “office expenses” subgroup could include office equipment, supplies and utilities. And if you don’t like how the dashboard looks, you can reorganize panels and hide the ones that aren’t useful. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services. Xero connects to more than 21,000 financial institutions around the globe, meaning the chances are very high you’ll be able to connect to your business bank accounts and automatically import transaction info.

Negative Xero Reviews & Complaints

In fact, all of Xero’s plans support unlimited users, which is great for expanding businesses. Xero also integrates with over 1,000 third-party business apps – among the most integrations of any accounting software package we reviewed. As a business moves into higher-growth phases, it will likely require more integrations to scale up and keep things running smoothly.

Xero does offer payroll features, but availability varies by country difference between turnover and revenue with table and region due to different payroll regulations. This in-depth Xero review will walk you through the tool’s pros and cons, features and functionality, and more to help guide you to better understand its capabilities and its suitability for your needs. Payments are due by the end of your monthly billing period based on the date you purchased your subscription. FreshBooks charges $17 per month and QuickBooks charges $30 per month). However, the best option and price point will depend on the specific capabilities and features you are looking for.

All of Xero’s plans come with a data capture and online file storage feature, making it easy to store information from receipts and scanned documents. You can use Xero’s demo company to create sample invoices using fictional data. A sample invoice can give you an idea of what an invoice will look like from a customer’s perspective.
